Odds n' Ends

Did ya miss me?! Sorry, I've been busy doing random things, but mostly just too lazy to blog. Don't worry, I'm back! But I do want to inform my loyal followers that I will be in the Bush (Kruger National Park) for the next 2 weeks. I'll be hanging with cheetahs and elephants, while staying in a hut in Hamakuya. I cannot wait to sport my camo shirt/night gown/ moving outfit for the next 9 days! I promise I will have some photo documentation of my attire-- get pumped.

Anyway, I am about to excite my mom and dad/ bore most of you with some info on the classes that I am taking. I'm in 4:
1. South Africa Politics- with Amanda, the Gender and Equality Commissioner of South Africa. She is the most amazing professor and she was asked to be a student spy for the government during apartheid. She declined and fought on behalf of black South Africans instead (she rules).
2. Service Learning- I am working once a week at an NGO called the Pebbles Project. Along with 3 other people, we volunteer with young children affected by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) teaching them English (but mostly just playing with them). We work on various wine farms in the area.

3. Public Health- with Stefanus, a baller that used to work in a small clinic in rural SA, then for UNICEF, then for Doctors without Borders. He now teaches at Stellies University and is the most compassionate person that I have ever met.
4. Language, Culture, and Identity- or what I like to call 5th grade World Club. Literally, this class is ridiculous. We sing songs, eat weird African food, and draw pictures. I LOVE IT. Also, we always have guest lecturers. This week I was given a Xhosa name (Chuma- that's with a click and it means to expand... IDK about the meaning).
Smilies- AKA Sheep's Head. Can you say YUM?!

WHEEWW that was a lot.

Today we went on an excursion to the Brookline Chest Hospital to look at TB care in South Africa. I just wrote a paper about this, otherwise I would go into more detail. Basically, it was really sad. After that we went to Nyanga, the oldest black township (with the highest crime rate... HI KETS). It was crazy. Trash was everywhere. However, we visited an NGO dedicated to giving the community sustainable gardens. Here are some pics:

This lady kept trying to sell me biltong (dried meat) because she said I looked sickly... IDK.
Well... That's enough for now. This is me and Samm at the das club. Enjoy!

XO K
